If You Can Read This

If you can read this, it means someone cared. A teacher, a sibling, a parent, a friend, someone sat beside you with a book in hand and sounded out each letter on the page. You “saw Spot run” or you “hopped on Pop” together and giggled at the strange symbols and the silly sounds they made.

If you can read this, it means someone tried. There was a person in your life who paid for schooling, textbooks, or worked with you themselves so that you could gain the one crucial skill to unlock the world.

If you can read this, it means you’re blessed. Out of all the billions of people living and breathing in this world, you’re among the 84% of the world’s population who can read and write. You can pick up a book, or read the instructions on medications at the store.

If you can read this, it means you can explore. Every book is a ticket to a new time, place, galaxy, life, and culture. It’s a chance to climb mountains, battle foes, fly away, or find your home again. You are never chained when you have a book. Nothing can hold you back from adventure.

If you can read this, it means you can learn. Look at your phone or open a book and you can learn about almost anything in the world. The answers to your questions are at your fingertips, and you can read them all.

If you can read this, it means you can teach. Though, 85% of adults are literate in the world, that leaves a significant population of people who aren’t. Without people like you, they’ll continue to struggle for the rest of their lives. Plus, there are thousands of children in your community who are at the beginning of their literacy journey. They need people to sit with them and to teach them; to care enough to give them the gift of reading.

If you can read this, you are limitless. You can learn, strive, be, explore, change, empower, love, create, understand, connect, and thrive through books. Universes, souls, and hearts rest between the lines of text on a page, and they’re all for you. Grab hold and cherish the gift of reading, and do everything you can to share that gift with the world. It’s an immeasurable power. Use it well.
